Blog by Tina Winterlik

http://tinawinterlik.blogspot.com/2011/05/mysti-mayhem-she-rocks.html
I just LOVE Mysti Mayhem, I used one of her songs "Better Than Money" for my video http://adventurezinmexico.blogspot.com/2010/10/join-adventurez-in-mexico-on-their.html

That song really spoke to me. When we were leaving on our original adventure we were up against alot of odds and I didn't truly know what to expect, all I knew was that Love is Better than Money, and if roughing it for a while meant my daughter would connect with her dad, and learn about her Mexican culture than that was worth more than it's weight in gold.

Mysti's song "Better than Money" really touched me and all her songs are so incredible, so touching. Check them out, you'll see what I'm talking about.

http://tinawinterlik.blogspot.com

Durham Magazine by Iesha Brown

MUSIC MONDAY: MYSTI MAYHEM
MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 27, 2010 AT 10:28AM | IESHA BROWN | POST A COMMENT

Mysti Mayhem
Last week I had the pleasure of speaking with musical artist Mysti Mayhem. Some of you may already know this 26-year-old singer/songwriter from her regular Friday night gig at Six Plates and from hosting open-mic Sunday nights at James Joyce. Well, if you haven't heard any of Mysti's music — a blend of acoustic, soul and folk — consider this your introduction.

She has five albums under her belt and has collaborated with the likes of Tenacious D and Dave Grohl of the Foo Fighters. She also trained under Bo Diddley for four years while living in Florida. She's toured all over America, in Mexico and in Europe. Although she currently isn't signed to a label, she's still recording independently. Mysti and her band, Corn and the Colonels, hope to join a local label soon.

Here's a little insight into why she chose to bring her musical talents to Durham and what she thinks is so unique about our music scene:

What made you want to move from New Mexico to Durham?

I needed to live in a place that has good music, people and that is up-and-coming but hasn’t already hit its peak yet. Like I didn’t want to go to Nashville. Already happened. Already happened in Austin. LA and New York. Already happened. I actually did a lot of online research and I found the Triangle was blooming. Everyone was raving about it. So, I was like OK. I’ll give it a shot.

How would you describe Durham's music community?

In the two years since I moved here, I just feel like it’s still growing. I feel like there are more artists everyday. There’s more venues popping up. Everybody’s really open to music here, all sorts of music. And I love that about Durham.

Why do you enjoy your gigs at Six Plates and James Joyce?

I like Six Plates because everyone is very relaxed. They’re listening. They’re kind. That’s everywhere in Durham. I kind of go there for the food as well.

I love James Joyce because Fergus Bradley owns it. He’s a really good guy. He takes care of musicians. The fact that he's really interested in supporting the music here in the area is so important”¦I think the main reason [I love James Joyce] is because it’s not about me on Sunday. It’s about people getting up for the first time and sharing their music.

What sets the music scene here apart?

When I first moved here it was much smaller. And more and more I’m seeing new artists and bands coming out. And, what’s really good is the bands work together to help each other out. I’ve been places before where bands will cut your tires to get to the gig. It’s really competitive. And that’s what I like about here. It’s not competitive.

Cd Review by Don Sechelski

http://www.musesmuse.com/mrev-mystimayhem-diversity.html

Artist: Mysti Mayhem
Album: Diversity
Label: Sellaband
Website: http://mystimayhem.com
Genre: Alt Pop/Rock
Sounds Like: Sheryl Crowe
Technical Grade: 9/10
Production/Musicianship Grade: 9/10
Commercial Value: 9/10
Overall Talent Level: 9/10
Songwriting Skills: 10/10
Performance Skill: 10/10
Best Songs: Dance, Screaming From Inside
CD Review:

Mysti Mayhem's new CD Diversity starts with a funky guitar riff and Mysti singing that "Love is better than money." The track, Better Than Money, is fresh and well crafted and sets the tone for the rest of the album. Well written songs, excellent musicianship and crisp production make this release shine above the rest. Mysti Mayhem wrote all the country rock flavored songs and provides some very nice guitar work. She is joined on drums by co-producer Cactus Moser. Robert Britt plays violin, Brian Bramburg plays cello, and Bill Bussman joins on upright bass. Shawn Spencer plays mandocello. Diversity was co-produced and mixed by Chris Stamey of the dB's. He also produced the alt-country band, Whiskytown. His work here is impeccable as always.

In the end, it's always the songs that make an album. This album has some very good songs. Come Back Around is a philosophical acoustic country song about the ways we look at life. Mysti gets funky again on Reason 2 Live before shifting into a Sheryl Crowe-like chorus. Her lyrics are witty and descriptive but with an emphasis on the positive.

"I make a change by living my life

In a way so much bigger than you or I.

I'm part of something that will make history

I got a reason to live for more than just me."

Dance features Mysti on solo acoustic guitar. Her artistry really shows through in this number. Her clear expressive voice with the bare acoustic is evocative. My personal favorite is the intense Screaming From Inside. Mysti's guitar interweaves with the violin to create a hypnotic tapestry. Her lyric is just as hypnotic. I can recommend Diversity by Mysti Mayhem as a well written, well produced album. It's one of the best I've heard this year.
